As we celebrate the last day of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’d like to spotlight the women in LA STEM’s leadership!
This year, the LA STEM Collective Advisory Board includes eight women from all over Los Angeles. They bring perspectives to the Collective from large and small non-profit organizations and museums, including the Natural History Museums of LA County (@NHMLA), the The Engineer Factory (@theengineerfactory), Friends of the Los Angeles River (@folarorg), and the Aquarium of the Pacific (@aquariumpacific).
Milena Acosta became the LA STEM Collective’s Board Chair last year, marking the Collective’s first year with a woman-led Board and a woman-led staff. She reflected on Women’s History Month and the meaning of #WomenInSTEM:
“To me, STEM is not just something that happens in laboratories or classrooms — it happens everywhere, every day. It’s in the questions we ask about the natural world, the ways communities solve problems, and the curiosity that drives discovery.
As a marine biologist, some of my favorite STEM moments happen outdoors — like exploring tidepools. Other times, STEM looks like leading campouts that connect people to nature, volunteering at the Society for Science’s International Science and Engineering Fair, or speaking and moderating conversations that make STEM more inclusive and accessible.
As Board Chair of the LA STEM Collective, I’m constantly reminded that STEM belongs to everyone. When women are visible as scientists, educators, and leaders, it helps the next generation see that they belong too.”
Grace Adams, Treasurer of the LA STEM Collective and Executive Director of the Roundhouse Aquarium (@roundhouseaquarium) also shared some advice for those interested in pursuing STEM in the future:
“Stay curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—they’re part of learning. Your ideas and perspective matter, and STEM needs diverse thinkers to solve the challenges of the future."

Happy Women’s History Month, LA STEM! This Women’s History Month, we are thrilled to celebrate the women in our leadership and staff.
🥳 Jamecca Marshall, the LA STEM Collective’s inaugural Executive Director, just celebrated her first year at the LA STEM! 🥳
Under her leadership over the last year, LA STEM has grown to 160 Member Organizations, celebrated 5 years of serving students, and made countless connections between local STEM organizations, school districts, students, and student organizations.
In her recent letter to the LA STEM Collective Members, she reflected on Women’s History Month and women in STEM: “Great women in STEM are born and raised in Los Angeles; many others come from around the world to study and teach, each with their own passion to make a difference.
I am proud to lead a mighty all-woman team at the LA STEM Collective and to work with an Advisory Board that includes eight brilliant women and a membership with dozens of women-led organizations, all passionate about STEM education in Los Angeles.”
Check out the link in our bio for a new article where Jamecca reflects on Women’s History Month, and a new interview on the Purpose Partner Podcast, available everywhere now!

A year ago, 14 wildfires swept through Los Angeles County, devastating families and communities in Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Pasadena.
We continue to honor the memory of those who lost their lives, to recognize the monumental efforts and dedication of those who are fighting to rebuild, and to encourage community and compassion as we each seek support and strengthen our neighbors, relatives, and friends.
It’s also been a year since 11 LA STEM organizations offered 70 hours of free programming to students affected by the fires. LA STEM was proud to partner with the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks (@lacityparks), the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation (@lacountyparks), and The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation (@broadfoundation) to bring hands-on STEM projects to students in Pasadena and Los Angeles.
LA STEM members met students where they were, encouraging students to experiment with LEGO puzzles, and explore “What is a Scientist.” In a time when the dark smoke hung over the city as a haze, LA STEM member organizations and volunteers shone bright, bringing smiles and laughter to all, including the park staff.
The 11 organizations included:
Columbia Memorial Space Center (@columbiaspace)
Discovery Cube (@discoverycubela)
Environerd (@_environerd)
Friends of the LA River (@folarorg)
Innoplaytion (@innoplaytion)
Los Angeles Zoo (@lazoo)
PS Science (@psscienceorg)
Rediscover Center (@rediscoverctr)
Roundhouse Aquarium (@roundhouseaquarium)
Treepeople (@treepeople_org), and
Two Bit Circus Foundation (@twobitcircusfoundation)
LA STEM organizations including Discovery Cube, Rediscover Center and the National History Museums of LA County (@nhmla) offered workshops, assemblies, and programming for displaced community members. The Engineer Factory (@theengineerfactory) and others hosted donation drives, supporting communities with needed toiletries, and educators with programming materials.
As families and communities continue to rebuild, LA STEM Collective stands ready to support our neighbors, students, and their families with community programs and STEM for all.

📚Quotes from the Classroom 📚
Expanded learning and afterschool programming offer opportunities for students to explore their interests, see role models, and practice what they’ve learned in the classroom. This Spring, LA STEM brought hands-on STEM programs to 46 afterschool programs at LAUSD schools this spring.
Afterwards, we asked the afterschool educators to share an “a-HA” moment that their students had during their programs. Here’s what they said:
📐 “I recall a student [who] was a special ed student. Although the activity was challenging, he tried and was able to participate. This was a rewarding experience for all involved.” 📐
